Top 5 Ways to Get Over it and Get it Done!

You know it fills your cup and nourishes your soul to do something creative but sometimes that initial motivation is tough to find…

Whether it’s starting something new or finishing up a project that has been sitting around for ages, these are my personal go-to methods for getting over myself and getting it DONE!

(I am an expert in all things procrastination and sewing and so who better to give you tips on avoiding the pitfalls? Haha, well… you let me know if these work!)

5) Get a Buddy

Someone who can either do it with you, or hold you accountable. Heck, I will be your buddy—that is what Sewing Club is for!!!

4) Write Down the Steps

It will eliminate stressful unknowns, and allow you to wrap your head around what’s to come. (Like when you read a recipe all the way through).

Plus you get the added satisfaction of crossing things OFF the list!

3) Plan for Mistakes

You will make mistakes. They are a fundamental component of sewing. Sewing humbles you. If you’re a professional sewist, you buy stitch rippers in packs of 50. In factory sewing, they increase stitch length to at least 3, because it’s a known fact that you will have to rip stitches. In fashion school, my teacher told us: estimate your sewing time, then multiply that by 3 and you might be close.

If you thought you were going to be a creative force without getting messy…you were wrong. Be the kind of person who just keeps going.

2) Know When to Take a Break

When you make a few mistakes in a row - take a break. This was a hard rule in my tailor shop. You need to shift focus for a bit – take a walk, get a doughnut, or have a chat. Creative tasks aren’t something you can simply grind at. It takes nuance and calm. You can’t be calm when you’re mad at the bobbin!

1) Indulge in it!

Put on a bad tv show / murder mystery podcast / a good playlist. You get lost in the task and it becomes like meditation.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Art is knowing which ones to keep.
